Our Livestock

Katahdin Hair Sheep

We raise Katahdin sheep here on the farm. Katahdins are a hearty, parasite-resistant, polled breed of hair sheep (they shed vs. needing to be shorn).

Our sheep are pasture-raised and rotationally grazed. We move our sheep every 1-3 days in the warmer seasons using portable electric netting, providing fresh pasture as they fertilize our land. We take biosecurity seriously, our animals have come from clean-tested farms (OPP, Johnes, CL) and any new animals are tested during a 60-day quarantine.

We breed our sheep and sell a select amount of lambs for breeding stock or meat, depending on the quality of the lamb.

  • At Firefly Farms, our focus is on Katahdin sheep, a resilient and parasite-resistant hair breed. We take pride in our prolific lines, known for their easy mothering. We have a range of fully registered to commercial, we are in the process of β€œupgrading / upbreeding” our flock. We use a registered ram every year, so every lamb will be at least 50% recordable and we will be able to administer hair tests on lambs over 88.5% to consider them registerable.

  • We are a forage-based farm. Feeding off the land or offering hay over winter. We do not creep feed. Our goal is to remain solely forage-based and source forage-based genetics.

    Exceptions:

    • Grain Treats - The occasional treat (less than a handful, and certainly not daily) for moving and handling purposes.

    • Molasses - We have been experimenting with offering molasses during late gestation to mitigate pregnancy toxemia.

    • Supplementation - We will supplement the occasional sheep for health purposes.

  • Our sheep live a natural life, grazing on pastures and benefiting from our rotational grazing practices. We move them every 1-3 days during the warmer seasons using portable electric netting for both their health and the land. We over-winter our sheep in shelters close to the house, with access to heated water.

We do hooves once a year unless otherwise needed. We only worm as needed and try to do a fecal test ahead of time.

We offer free-choice loose mineral (custom mixed at our local mill) and baking soda year round, with an added coccidiostat around lambing.

  • We take biosecurity seriously, our animals have come from clean-tested farms (OPP, Johnes, CL) and any new animals are tested during a 60-day quarantine. Our animals do not leave the farm, they are not rented out or shown.

  • We do not buy cheap animals from the auction house, we buy animals from farms that raise animals similar to how we do and follow thorough biosecurity measures.

Pasture Raised Meat/Broiler Chickens

We raise batches of Cornish Cross for our meat/broiler chickens. Our birds are pasture-raised and moved daily to provide fresh greens, fresh bugs, and a healthy habitat as they fertilize our land. Our chickens are processed on-farm to reduce the stress on the birds. We follow poultry processing guidelines and regulations. We have whole birds available ranging from 3-8lbs per finished bird.

Layer Chickens

We raise and keep a flock of prolific egg-layer chickens. Our layers are on pasture to forage for bugs and greens. We are currently raising several breeds (~40) producing rainbow eggs of white, brown, blue, and green shades. We also have a small flock of bantams (miniature chickens). Please contact us, if you’re interested in pasture-raised eggs, hatching eggs, chicks or pullets. We deliver eggs to Rochester, NY every month.
